Talking River Review, Lewis-Clark State College's literary journal, seeks examples of literary excellence and originality.  Send us your poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction manuscripts. Please do not mix different genres in the same submission.

For thirty years, we've featured creative work by some of this country’s best contemporary writers. Past contributors include Steve Almond, Beth Alvarado, Kim Barnes, Mary Clearman Blew, Sherwin Bitsui, Judy Blunt, Michael Earl Craig, Claire Davis, David James Duncan, Stephen Dunn, Gary Fincke, Pete Fromm, CMarie Fuhrman, Jim Harrison, Patricia Henley, B.J. Hollars, William Johnson, William Kittredge, Dorianne Laux, Lee Martin, Michael Martone, Ron McFarland, Neide Messer, Brenda Miller, Lia Purpura, Alberto Rios, Rob Schlegel, Michael Wasson, Joe Wilkins, and Robert Wrigley, among others.

As payment, contributors receive one copy of the issue in which their work appears, a one-year subscription to TRR beginning with the following issue, and a one-year gift subscription for a friend beginning with the issue in which the author's work appears.

Writers should submit no more than one long prose piece (up to 4,000 words) at a time and no more than two short-shorts (250 - 1,000 words) at a time. All prose manuscripts should be double-spaced. There are no particular content restrictions.

We accept poetry manuscripts without regard to content. Poets should submit no more than five poems at a time.

Please send one submission at a time and wait for a response before you submit additional work. If your work has been accepted for publication, please wait at least six months between submissions. We do not consider book-length works.

We are also looking for photography & art.  Please submit 5-8 pieces at a time. We may ask for additional images based on this submission. We do not accept work that has been previously published elsewhere. Upon acceptance, we will request high res files, an author's bio, and an artist's statement. We publish art in full color, often selecting between 2 and 4 artists for each issue.

Talking River Review is published biannually by the Associated Students of Lewis-Clark State College (ASLCSC). Subscriptions are $12 per year (which includes two issues ) and back issues are $12.  Submitters are strongly encouraged to read the journal before submitting. Visit our website, talkingriverreview.com, for more details.

Talking River Review staff read submissions August 1 through April 1. Simultaneous submissions are okay as long as you notify us if accepted elsewhere

STATEMENT ON AI:Talking River Review prohibits the use of any artificial intelligence (AI) in all submissions. AI includes anything that performs tasks similar to human cognitive functions with logical reasoning such as learning language modules like ChatGPT. We consider the use of AI as deceitful and fraudulent, and it will not be tolerated.  We recognize that the use of AI is a growing issue in the publishing industry and we are actively seeking to combat it. Any past published pieces that are found to be AI-generated will be eradicated from our archives immediately. Submissions found to be using AI will not be considered and the contributor will be banned from future submissions. We do not consider the use of spell check as an AI source, and we encourage all authors to fully revise and edit their pieces before submitting. AI is not capable of creation, only stealing. Publishing AI would minimize the work of dedicated and talented authors. Above all we value human expression and the use of an author’s authentic voice.
